ISBE-Approved Microcredentials

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is an Illinois State Board of Education-approved professional development provider. Therefore, UIUC may grant professional development hours (PDHs) and award microcredentials to Illinois public educators.

The Council on Teacher Education (CoTE) coordinates all PDHs and microcredentials that UIUC offers.

Microcredentials

A microcredential is a digital badge that acknowledges extensive learning and is attached to an Illinois Public Educator’s professional educator license (PEL). Illinois public educators with a PEL can earn a microcredential. This includes pre-service and in-service educators. School districts and employers may use microcredentials to determine which staff or potential employees have expertise in specific topics.

Criteria

A microcredential must satisfy a few criteria:

  • The learning must be job-embedded, requiring participants to reflect on past and current practice and plan for future practice.
  • The learning must align with certain standards associated with teaching and learning in Illinois.
  • The learning must be rigorous (the equivalent to what we would expect for a college course, for example).

Note:  Microcredentials may not substitute for coursework toward a degree or a license.

Offering a Microcredential

Any faculty, staff, or unit associated with the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with an Illinois.edu email may offer a microcredential.

To offer a microcredential, schedule an appointment with CoTE by emailing pdh@cote.illinois.edu. We will consult with you to verify that the microcredential meets the minimum criteria and to explain the application process.
